Outside of surgeries, asthma is the leading admitting diagnosis at Children's. Today, the asthma bays in the Emergency Department are overflowing - likely because of the wild fires that have devastated Texas and Oklahoma.
Chris Wagner, a pediatric nurse practitioner, an asthma educator and the program manager of the Comprehensive Asthma Program at Children's, says she expects the poor air quality will be a problem until we get a good rain - which by most meteorologists' predictions will be on Easter Sunday.
Her best advice? "Everyone should stay indoors as much as possible during red and purple ozone alert days, and kids with breathing problems should limit outdoor activity during yellow and orange alert days, too."
