Summer Job May = Disappointment

We've already covered the pros for part-time summer work for your teen.

But, I mentioned there are a few potential pitfalls to a summer job, too. Especially this summer. Let's talk about those.

You've probably noticed - unemployment rates are pretty high these days. This means even if your teen wants a summer job, she may have a hard time finding one. Will a job hunt set her up for disappointment?

If she chooses to apply anyway, remind her that many people are vying for the same jobs right now, and if she doesn't get the position, to not take it personally.

So, let's suppose she works her contacts, creates a stellar resume and aces the interview with her winning personality. She gets the job! Then what?

Dr. Stavinoha reminds us that the work force may be full of new stressors for a teen. As the "low man on the totem poll," she may may have to learn how to work with older colleagues or demanding supervisors. Just remember this new environment may make your teen feel vulnerable and to provide the proper amount of support as she adjusts to life in the working world.

And remember, it's called summer "break" for a reason. Ensure she aims for the same work/life balance we all strive for year-round!
