The latter cases always surprise me. As great of a place as Children’s is for patients and families while they need medical care, it undeniably remains a hospital – a place where patients and families experience pain, sickness, anxiety and possibly worse. Of all the places that seem to naturally attract return visitors, a hospital seems like one of the least likely to make the list. But Children’s seems to be an exception to that rule.
Last week, I had the privilege of seeing a patient not only come back to the hospital but bring gifts as well.
Instead of only celebrating her 16th birthday by receiving presents, Temple Mims decided the most fitting celebration would be to give back to the hospital that enabled her to make it to "Sweet 16." She collected four red trailers full of teddy bears to give to patients. She also reunited with Dr. Barry Hicks, who performed lifesaving intestinal surgery on her when she was an infant. Temple’s father, Bobby Mims, was especially grateful to Dr. Hicks.
I had the chance to ask Temple a few questions about her teddy bear donations. She said that the experience made this the best birthday of her life. Now, that is good.
